UP: SIT to recreate crime scene in Atiq, Ashraf murder case

According to reports, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to investigate the murders of Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf will soon recreate the crime scene as part of its ongoing investigation. The SIT team will also look into how many police officers attempted to apprehend the attackers and how long it took to bring them under control. On Sunday, nearly two days after three people impersonating journalists gunned down gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in Prayagraj, the Uttar Pradesh police announced the formation of two special investigating teams (SITs) to investigate the heinous killings.

According to an order issued by Prayagraj Commissioner of Police Ramit Sharma on Sunday, the first SIT, to be led by Additional DCP (crime) Satish Chandra, has been formed to investigate the murder case registered at Shahganj police station.

The second SIT has been formed to oversee the first. According to an order issued by Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police RK Vishwakarma on Sunday, this SIT will be led by ADG Prayagraj Zone Bhanu Bhaskar and will include the Prayagraj Commissioner of Police and the director of Forensic Science Laboratory.

On Saturday night, while being taken for a medical examination in Prayagraj, Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf Ahmad was shot dead by men posing as journalists.

Both gangsters collapsed on the spot after being shot at close range. Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, took notice of the incident and established a judicial commission to investigate it. The district court sentenced all three assailants, Arun Maurya, Sunny Singh, and Lovelesh Tiwari, to 14 days in judicial custody on Sunday.

On Sunday, the last rites of a gangster-turned-politician and his brother were performed at a family graveyard in Prayagraj’s Kasari Masari area. Atiq Ahmed was charged in the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal, as well as the February 2014 murder of Umesh Pal, a key witness in that case.
