In Uttar Pradesh, a staggering 12,964 police encounters have been recorded over the past seven years.
Of these encounters, 207 criminals were killed, while 17 police officers lost their lives. From March 20, 2017, to September 5, 2024, an average of one listed criminal was killed every 13 days during these encounters.
Most of the criminals targeted had bounties ranging from ₹75,000 to ₹500,000 on their heads.
The Uttar Pradesh police have adhered to Supreme Court guidelines during these encounters, and none of the police encounters conducted since 2017 have come under the Supreme Court’s scrutiny.
The Meerut zone leads the state with the highest number of encounters—3,723—resulting in the death of 66 criminals and the arrest of 7,017 offenders. Statewide, from March 20, 2017, to September 5, 2024, police have arrested 27,117 miscreants following encounters, with 1,601 criminals sustaining injuries.
