Uttarakhand Prepares For 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, Requests Extra Paramilitary Forces for Security

As the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 approach, Uttarakhand is gearing up with the establishment of 11,500 booths, and additional paramilitary forces are being sought to address security concerns in the state.

Out of the total booths set up, 1,500 have been identified as hypersensitive, warranting the deployment of half to one section of paramilitary forces to ensure enhanced security in these areas. The Police Headquarters has shared that an additional 15 percent of paramilitary forces have been requested from the Center for the smooth conduct of the elections. The demand includes 115 companies of paramilitary forces, and in the initial phase, 20 companies have been allocated to the state.

Police deployment has been strategically planned, taking into account the specific needs of each district. The districts of Udham Singh Nagar, Haridwar, Dehradun, and Nainital are slated to receive the highest allocation of paramilitary forces. Alongside paramilitary personnel, the state will witness the participation of PAC, Home Guards, and the local police force, as outlined in an official release.

Highlighting the significance of preparedness, the Election Commission of India recently visited Guwahati in Assam to assess the election arrangements. The commission engaged in discussions with officials and political parties, focusing on reviewing the security measures in the state.

To ensure fair and transparent elections, the poll body organized briefings for the observers who will be deployed in various states and Union Territories. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar stressed the vital role of observers in maintaining a level-playing field and conducting intimidation-free and inducement-free elections. Observers, as representatives of the Commission, were directed to uphold professionalism and maintain accessibility to all stakeholders, including candidates.

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are scheduled to take place between April and May this year, marking a crucial period in India’s democratic process. The preparations and security measures undertaken in Uttarakhand reflect the commitment to conducting a smooth and fair electoral process.
