Brahm Singh Tanwar, a seasoned leader in Delhi’s political landscape, has officially joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), ending decades-long ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Tanwar’s switch to AAP was announced on Thursday by AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal, who praised Tanwar as a prominent figure who has dedicated years to serving Delhi’s people.
Brahm Singh Tanwar, who has represented various Delhi constituencies over the years, previously served in the Delhi Assembly for Mehrauli from 1993 to 2003 and was later elected from Chhatarpur in 2013. However, he was defeated in the 2015 and 2020 assembly polls by AAP’s Kartar Singh Tanwar, who also later joined the BJP.
At the induction ceremony, Kejriwal highlighted Tanwar’s extensive contributions to Delhi’s political and social landscape. “For the past 50 years, he has served the people of Delhi in various capacities – sometimes from within the government, sometimes outside, but always dedicated to public service,” said Kejriwal.
Kejriwal emphasized Tanwar’s role in driving development in the areas he represented and noted that Tanwar’s commitment has been instrumental in advancing Delhi’s growth. Kejriwal added that AAP, founded over a decade ago, is attracting numerous reputable figures impressed by the party’s work in Delhi and now in Punjab.
“There has been a ‘steady influx’ of good people to the AAP,” Kejriwal observed, adding that this support was helping the party grow and energize its efforts to bring more comprehensive governance to the regions it serves.
Expressing optimism about Tanwar’s involvement in AAP, Kejriwal shared his hopes for the impact Tanwar and his supporters will bring to the party’s mission in Delhi. “Impressed by AAP’s work, good people will join us, and the public will support us,” he stated. “This is the time when in a democracy, the public evaluates its elected representative every five years. Everyone will be evaluated based on their work.”
Kejriwal believes Tanwar’s leadership will infuse fresh energy into AAP, helping to further strengthen the party’s commitment to the development of Delhi and its neighborhoods.
In his statement at the induction, Tanwar shared the motivations behind his decision to join AAP. He expressed admiration for AAP’s values and future vision, crediting Kejriwal’s dedication to public service and community welfare. “I have fully resolved to sever my ties with the BJP and join the AAP to work under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal. It is truly a privilege for me to join AAP through his guidance, as he embodies the commitment to public service and a vision for a better future for Delhi,” Tanwar said.
Tanwar also underscored his goal to work closely with Kejriwal to support AAP’s vision of inclusive progress for Delhi, especially its villages and suburban areas. He highlighted his desire to contribute to the betterment of the entire National Capital Region (NCR), in alignment with Kejriwal’s goals for the state’s development.
Tanwar conveyed his gratitude to Kejriwal and the AAP leadership for welcoming him and his allies into the party. He mentioned that several of his former BJP colleagues and office-bearers have joined or shown interest in working with AAP, remarking, “Many who could not join us will soon be a part of this movement. Several of my former colleagues and office-bearers from the BJP are also here, ready to work alongside AAP.”
