Following the successful Chandrayaan-3 Moon landing, India is now preparing for its upcoming solar mission known as ‘Aditya-L1.’ The head of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), S Somnath, has announced that the ISRO team has concluded the launch rehearsal.
During a media briefing, the ISRO Chief stated, “We are in the final stages of launch preparation. Both the rocket and satellite are ready, and we have successfully completed the launch rehearsal. Tomorrow, we will commence the countdown, with the launch scheduled for the day after tomorrow.”
Aditya-L1 marks India’s maiden venture into space-based solar observation. Earlier, on August 14, ISRO had disclosed its plans for the Aditya-L1 mission, emphasizing its significance as the first Indian space-based solar observatory. The mission’s satellite, constructed at the U R Rao Satellite Centre (URSC) in Bengaluru, has now reached its launch site at SDSC-SHAR, Sriharikota.
According to an official ISRO statement, the Aditya L1 spacecraft is equipped with seven specialized instruments designed to study various aspects of the Sun, including the photosphere, chromosphere, and the outermost layer, the corona. These instruments consist of electromagnetic particle and magnetic field detectors. Four of them are positioned to directly observe the Sun, while the remaining three conduct in-situ investigations of particles and fields at the Lagrange point L1, offering valuable insights into the solar dynamics’ impact on the interplanetary environment.
The data collected by Aditya L1’s instruments is expected to provide essential information for comprehending critical solar phenomena such as coronal heating, coronal mass ejections, pre-flare and flare activities, space weather dynamics, particle and field propagation, and more. This mission holds great promise for advancing our understanding of the Sun’s behavior and its influence on our solar system.
