Delhi’s Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, expressed gratitude to the residents of Delhi for their cooperation in reducing fireworks usage during Diwali, which helped prevent the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) from reaching ‘severe’ levels. He acknowledged both the public’s role and government efforts in curbing pollution, while noting minor instances of non-compliance.
Minister Rai highlighted the positive impact of citizens’ restraint on air pollution, emphasizing how public support helped keep AQI readings under control. “The collective effort to limit firecracker use has directly contributed to keeping our AQI from crossing into the severe category,” he said. Rai praised the responsible actions of most residents while calling for greater adherence to restrictions to protect air quality.
While addressing the media, AAP Minister Gopal Rai, sais, “The Delhi government has initiated a “Water Spraying Campaign” across the city to tackle rising pollution levels. As part of this effort, two mobile anti-smog guns are being deployed in each of Delhi’s 70 assembly constituencies. These mobile units will operate in three shifts to ensure continuous spraying across Delhi, helping to reduce airborne dust and particulate matter.”
He added saying, “Residents are encouraged to report pollution sources they encounter, such as construction dust, by downloading the ‘Green Delhi’ app. Through the app, users can easily snap and submit pictures, allowing the government to take prompt action.”
Stop car engine in signals:
Rai said, “For those traveling by car, the government requests that drivers turn off their engines at red lights to reduce vehicular emissions. With community cooperation, the Delhi government is committed to monitoring and managing pollution 24/7.”
The Green Delhi app is a platform enabling citizens to report pollution issues and environmental violations directly to the Delhi government. This app was launched in October 2020 by the Delhi administration.
Although the majority of the public complied, a few areas witnessed limited firecracker use. Rai underscored that complete compliance could have led to an even more significant improvement in Delhi’s air quality. He reiterated the government’s dust control measures, which included deploying two mobile anti-smog guns per assembly constituency and extensive water spraying to contain dust pollution during Diwali.
Despite the efforts, Friday morning saw Delhi blanketed in smog, and the AQI dropped to 362, indicating ‘very poor’ air quality. This year’s Diwali marked the highest pollution levels the city has faced in three years, with an average AQI of 362 recorded over the 24 hours following the festival.
