“What’s wrong with India” is trending on social media. The social media is flooded with posts with this phrase. The phrase became a trend with 4.3 lakhs posts and even the government of India (MyGovIndia) participating.
But what is “What’s wrong with India”?
The story began a few days ago when a Spanish tourist was gang-raped in India’s Jharkhand. This led to widespread outrage on social with numerous users sharing their negative travel experiences in India.
Nevertheless, certain accounts seized upon this event to discredit India, claiming that such occurrences were commonplace in the country daily.
But here is the twist with users using reverse card:
On March 13th numerous users in India, identified as X users, posted content with a unique twist.
They shared images and videos depicting comparable incidents from other countries alongside the caption ‘what’s wrong with India’.
Their aim was to demonstrate that X’s algorithm was prioritizing posts featuring the phrase ‘what’s wrong with India’, thereby amplifying anti-India content.
Remarkably, some of these posts, originating from users with fewer than 300 followers, garnered over one lakh impressions, with a notable ratio of comments and likes.
Not only the users, but government’s citizen engagement portal MyGovIndia also jumped into the trend, sharing India’s success story.
The origin of the widespread attention garnered by the phrase ‘what’s wrong with India’ remains uncertain. However, the Indian X community effectively co-opted the expression, turning it into a trend that aligned with their interests.
