West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responded on Saturday to the uproar surrounding the death of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, stating that the accused would face the death penalty if necessary. She mentioned that she has instructed the case to be expedited through a fast-track court.
Describing the incident as “unfortunate,” Banerjee revealed that the arrested suspect was employed at the hospital. She also shared that she had spoken with the trainee doctor’s family and assured them that appropriate action would be taken.

“First and foremost, this incident is both tragic and disgraceful. I feel a personal sense of loss. The doctors’ anger and demands are justified, and I fully support them. The police have also agreed to their demands,” Banerjee said.
“I have ordered the case to be fast-tracked. If necessary, the accused will face the death penalty, but they must receive the harshest punishment possible,” she added.
Addressing the ongoing protests by doctors, Banerjee stated, “If the protesters feel they lack confidence in the state administration, they are free to seek assistance from any other law enforcement agency. I have no objections. Our priority is a thorough investigation and severe punishment for those responsible.”
She urged the protesting doctors to continue treating patients while they protest. “As we have our responsibilities, the hospital superintendent also has theirs. We will investigate whether there was any negligence involved,” she said.
The Chief Minister confirmed that she was in regular contact with the police regarding the investigation. When asked if the victim’s family had requested an inquiry by a central agency, she responded, “We have no objections, as we have nothing to hide. The Commissioner of Police was at the hospital and kept in touch with me. I am clear in saying that exemplary punishment must be delivered.”
Autopsy Report
A four-page autopsy report revealed that the woman suffered from bleeding in her private parts and had injuries on other parts of her body.
“There was bleeding from her eyes and mouth, injuries on her face, and a nail was found. The victim also had bleeding from her private parts, as well as injuries to her abdomen, left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips,” PTI quoted the autopsy report as stating.
