The Union Cabinet has given its approval for the establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) aimed at facilitating the “World’s Largest Grain Storage Plan in Cooperative Sector.” This initiative will involve the convergence of various schemes from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Ministry of Food Processing Industries.
During a media briefing following the union cabinet meeting, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur announced that the world’s largest food storage scheme in the cooperative sector has been approved. The scheme will be implemented at a cost of Rs 1 lakh crore. As part of this initiative, a godown with a capacity of 2,000 tonnes will be constructed in every block. An inter-ministerial committee will be established to oversee the implementation of the plan. Additionally, the cabinet has made a decision to launch the City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain – CITIIS 2.0 program.
To ensure timely and uniform implementation of the plan in a professional manner, the Ministry of Cooperation will initiate a pilot project in at least 10 selected districts across different states and union territories in the country. This pilot project will provide valuable insights into the specific regional requirements of the plan, and the knowledge gained from it will be incorporated into the nationwide implementation of the scheme.
