Delhi Assembly Election LIVE Updates: Delhi Legislative Assembly to Vote Feb 5; Results Out Feb 8
The Election Commission of India announced today that the Delhi Assembly elections will be held in a single phase on February 5, 2025, with the vote counting scheduled for February 8. The announcement was made during a press conference by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with other senior poll officials.
The current 70-member Delhi Legislative Assembly’s term is set to end on February 23, 2025, and elections must be held before that date to form a new House. Delhi has consistently held its Assembly elections in a single phase, and this year will be no exception.
The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is aiming to secure a third consecutive term, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is putting in every effort to change the political landscape. The Congress party, which was aligned with AAP during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is contesting independently this time, targeting both the BJP and AAP.
During the press conference, CEC Rajiv Kumar also highlighted an important milestone for India, stating that the country is set to create a new record by surpassing one billion voters. “Electoral rolls were released yesterday, and we are nearing 99 crore voters. We are on track to become a nation with over one billion voters, which will be another significant achievement for democracy,” Kumar remarked.
In addition to discussing India’s electoral progress, he also noted that 2024 is being seen as the “year of elections globally,” with two-thirds of the world’s population in democracies participating in elections across different nations.
