Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday for establishing the Global Biofuels Alliance during the G20 summit, calling it a ‘matter of good fortune’ for sugarcane farmers.
He highlighted that the alliance, with its headquarters in Gurugram, provides a global platform for exporting sugarcane products, benefiting sugarcane farmers, cooperatives, and sugar mills.
“PM Modi has formed the Global Biofuels Alliance during the G20 summit, and by setting up its headquarters in Gurugram, he has created a platform for exporting all the sugarcane produced. This is a matter of good fortune for our farmers. I am confident that our sugarcane farmers, cooperatives, and sugar mills will benefit the most from this initiative,” Shah said.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, the Global Biofuels Alliance (GBA) is a multi-stakeholder alliance involving governments, international organizations, and industries. Initiated by India as the G20 Chair, it aims to unite major biofuel consumers and producers to advance the development and deployment of biofuels. The initiative seeks to position biofuels as a crucial component of the energy transition and to contribute to job creation and economic growth.

Shah also noted the progress in the sugar industry over the past decade since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister.
“In the past 10 years, there has been significant progress across all sectors, including the sugar industry. In 2013-14, the area under sugarcane cultivation was 5 million hectares, which has now expanded to 6 million hectares, marking an 18 percent increase. Sugarcane production has grown from 352 million tonnes to 491 million tonnes, a 40 percent increase. Gross sugar production has also risen by 58 percent,” Shah said.
Amit Shah made these remarks while attending the ‘Sugar Conclave and National Efficiency Award 2022-23’ ceremony as the chief guest in the national capital. The event was organized by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) Limited.
The Ministry of Cooperation notes that the NFCSF is an apex body comprising all 260 cooperative sugar factories and nine state sugar federations across the country.
