Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended his greetings on National Handloom Day on Wednesday, highlighting that the handloom sector embodies Bharat’s pride, progress, and heritage. On the social media platform X, he wrote, “On #NationalHandloomDay, I extend my greetings to our dedicated weavers and everyone associated with the sector. The handloom sector reflects Bharat’s pride, progress, and heritage. The Modi government is committed to the sector’s prosperity and has launched several schemes to support it. May this occasion strengthen our resolve to promote and choose handloom products, further enhancing the sector.”
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also sent greetings, expressing pride in the rich heritage and tradition of handlooms across the nation. “Greetings on National Handloom Day! We take immense pride in the rich heritage and vibrant tradition of handlooms in our country. We also appreciate the efforts of our artisans and reaffirm our commitment to be ‘Vocal for Local.'”
The 10th National Handloom Day is being celebrated today at Vigyan Bhawan in the national capital, with Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar as the chief guest. Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh and Minister of State for External Affairs & Textiles Pabitra Margherita will attend the event. MPs, eminent personalities, designers, industry representatives, exporters, senior government officers, and over 1,000 weavers from across the country will be present.

During the function, the Sant Kabir Awards and National Handloom Awards will be presented to handloom weavers for their exceptional contributions to the sector. The award catalogue and coffee table book, “Parampara: Sustainability in Handloom Traditions of India,” will be released by the Vice President of India.
Initiated under the Prime Minister’s vision, National Handloom Day has been celebrated since August 7, 2015, marking the Swadeshi Movement launched on August 7, 1905, which promoted indigenous industries, especially handloom weaving.
National Handloom Day aims to honor handloom weavers, provide motivation, and instill pride in the handloom industry by recognizing their contributions to the cultural, traditional, and economic landscape of the country. The celebrations are designed to raise awareness about the handloom sector’s importance and its role in the socio-economic development of India.
