Atishi Slams BJP As Delhi Increases Minimum Wages For Workers

On Wednesday, Delhi Chief Minister Atishi revealed a significant hike in minimum wages for various categories of workers in the national capital, a decision aimed at improving the financial security of laborers across the region. This change is especially crucial in the current economic climate, where rising costs have made it increasingly difficult for many to make ends meet.

New Wage Structure

Under the revised policy, unskilled workers will now earn a minimum monthly wage of ₹18,066. For semi-skilled workers, the new wage is set at ₹19,929, while skilled workers will see their minimum wage rise to ₹21,917 per month. This structured increase is a clear attempt by the government to ensure fair compensation and improve the quality of life for workers at different skill levels.

Criticism of BJP

During her announcement, Atishi did not shy away from addressing political rivalries. She criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), labeling them as “anti-poor.” According to her, the minimum wages in BJP-ruled states are alarmingly low—potentially half of what workers receive in Delhi. This assertion highlights the stark contrast between the policies of the Delhi government and those in other states, emphasizing Delhi’s commitment to labor rights.

Commitment to Wage Revisions

Atishi expressed pride in the Kejriwal government‘s track record of revising wages biannually, despite facing hurdles from opposition parties. She asserted that these revisions are essential for protecting workers’ rights and ensuring they receive just compensation for their labor. This commitment signals the government’s ongoing dedication to uplifting its workforce.

Meeting with Officials

The announcement followed Atishi’s first meeting with key ministers and department heads, where she aimed to foster a spirit of cooperation. Prominent figures such as Gopal Rai, Saurabh Bharadwaj, and Kailash Gahlot participated in the meeting, which focused on aligning government efforts to better serve the public.

A Call for Unity

In her address, Atishi emphasized the necessity of unity among officials. She stated, “Let’s come together for the benefit of the people of Delhi. The work we do directly impacts their lives, and it’s essential that we support our teams in this endeavor.” Her remarks underline the importance of collaboration within the government to achieve effective governance.

Accountability to Citizens

Atishi also touched on the principle of accountability, reminding everyone that the government is ultimately answerable to the citizens. “We depend on the taxes paid by the people of Delhi, and it is our responsibility to deliver the best possible services. We must fulfill our duties with integrity and transparency,” she noted. This statement reinforces the idea that good governance should prioritize the needs of the public.
