Days after Priyank Kanoongo, the head of the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, claimed to have been assaulted at Tiljila police station, the Kolkata police stated on Sunday that a case has been filed against the accused West Bengal Police officer.
“This is to state that based on the letter of complaint submitted by Shri Priyank Kanoongo, Chair Person of NCPCR, Govt. of India a specific case has been registered vide Tiljala PS Case No. 82 dated 31.03.2023 u/s- 323/353/341/506/34 IPC against Shri Biswak Mukherjee, Officer-in-Charge of Tiljala PS, Kolkata. The investigation of the case is in progress,” read an official statement from the Deputy Commissioner of Police South East Division, Kolkata.
On March 31, the NCPCR chairman claimed that a West Bengal Police officer had beaten him up at the Tiljila police station after he complained against them for allegedly recording proceedings of the commission’s investigation.
Taking to Twitter, he posted, “Bengal police officer Biswak Mukherjee snatched and beat me up at Tiljila police station in West Bengal.”
He stated that the Bengal police were secretly recording the NCPCR’s investigative hearings into the murder of a girl in Kolkata and the rape of a juvenile in Malda.
“The officers were secretly filming the @NCPCR investigative proceedings. They thrashed me for protesting “He went on to say.
He stated that the team visited the rape survivor’s home on Friday and spoke with her parents.
“We are here to inspect. But the state commission chairperson forcefully came into the house with goons and didn’t allow us to talk. We have come here to the police station, but we are not allowed to talk here also,” Kanoongo added.
The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) was established in 2005 under the requirements of the Commissions for the Protection of Child Rights (CPCR) Act to protect child rights and other relevant issues.
One of the Commission’s tasks under Section 13 (1) (j) of the CPCR Act is to investigate complaints and take suo motu cognizance of deprivation and abuse of child rights.
