The Delhi High Court on Wednesday gave respondents two weeks to file their response to a petition contesting the re-election of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s Standing Committee (MCD). In a special hearing on February 25, the court suspended the re-election, which was planned for February 27, 2023. Judge Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav on Wednesday gave two weeks time to the respondents to prepare their replies.

The term “independent” refers to a person who does not work for the government. The subject was listed for further hearing on April 24. All respondents, including recently elected Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi, have received notice from the bench.

On February 24, the Mayor stated that new elections for the Standing Committee will be held on February 27 at 11 a.m. The declaration came in the aftermath of the previous pandemonium in the MCD House while voting for Standing Committee members.

Bedlam erupted after the Mayor deemed one vote in the election to choose six members of the Standing Committee illegal. The Mayor’s decision to declare re-elections without disclosing the results of the previous vote “prima facie breaches regulations,” according to the bench of Justice Gaurang Kant.
