Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri Discusses Progress and Future Plans for Housing Schemes

NewsX Editor-in-Chief Rishab Gulati began the discussion by asking how close we were to the saturation of schemes and how close are we now from ‘pakka ghar’ for every Indian.

To which the Union Minister replied, “The provision for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna in that we have already sanctioned in the previous period 4 crore homes both in the Urban and rural sectors and this budget makes the provision for 3 crore more.’ He further added, “The demand assessment for this comes from the states, the land is a state subject so you could say what is the central government doing in housing, but the Modi government has proved that with a central government scheme which has four verticles we have been able to assist the schemes.”

Further in the conversation, it was asked whether the states are implementing the schemes effectively and uniformly, or if there are notable examples of both success and shortcomings.

On this, the Union Minister took the example of UP and said, “The Pradhan Mantri awas yojana was introduced in June 2015, Akhilesh ji was the CM of UP and he continued to be the CM of UP till sometime in 2017 when Yogi ji took over. The maximum demand generation that would come from Uttar Pradesh at that point in time was 17,000 in 17 months. I took the figure for the next 17 months under the Yogi government and that 17 thousand became 70 lacs. Same state with a little bit of push from the top and it changes.” He also added. “This is a country that is changing rapidly and urban transformation is staring you in the face.”

Balancing Oil, Gas, and Green Energy

He further spoke on the fresh exploration of oil and gas amidst the growing green energy push and said, “Absolutely, ‘I have never been reluctant or shy to admit that no matter how much of green transition we talk about our biofuels blending has gone up from 1.4% in 2014 to 15% now and we have a target of 20% for 2030 but we are bringing it forward to 2025, but no matter what we do we are still going to be dependent on fossil fuels and we need exploration and production for at least 20 years.”

He further stated the reason for oil and gas exploration and said, “We have a population and a fast-growing economy which grew at 8% our rate of energy consumption overall is about three times the global average, but our growth of petrol and diesel which is coming from fossil fuels is seven times the global average, and IEA has estimated that 25% of the increase in demand is going to come from India.”

Future Fuel Price Stability

Further in the discussion, it was asked if the petrol, CNG, LPG, and diesel prices will be stable or not in the coming months and years, to which he replied, “There are certain things the government of India can do and the Prime Minister has demonstrated on two occasions November 2021 and May 2022 he brought out the central excise rate which brought down the price of petrol and diesel by 13 rs and 6 rs. The BJP states reduced their VAT and the price differential between a BJP state and a non-BJP state is 10 rs per liter.”

He further stated, “Gas prices will come down, our production has been going up by about 18% every year and the situation in 2025-26 looks like we are going to reach a point where more gas is going to be available.”

In summary, Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted significant strides in the housing and energy sectors during his discussion on India News Manch. He underscored the transformative impact of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna, the balanced approach between green energy and fossil fuels, and the measures taken to stabilize fuel prices. His insights reflect ongoing efforts to address India’s evolving needs and challenges.
