The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the Delhi-NCR region following intense rainfall that struck the city on Wednesday evening. The unanticipated downpour has caused widespread waterlogging across various areas, significantly disrupting traffic and complicating pedestrian movement.
According to the latest forecast, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to persist in Delhi, Noida, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad over the next few hours. “Clouds have converged over Delhi from all directions,” the IMD stated, adding that wind speeds could reach 30-50 km/h. The red alert is in effect until 9 pm.

Waterlogging in New Parliament’s Makar Dwar
The severe rainfall has led to extensive waterlogging, with one of the most notable impacts being observed at the New Parliament’s Makar Dwar. This area, which holds significant importance, was inundated, highlighting the severity of the downpour and its impact on key infrastructure.

Delhi recorded over 100 mm of rainfall within a single hour, prompting the IMD to issue a ‘red’ warning. The torrential rain led to disruptions at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, where at least 10 flights bound for Delhi were diverted after 7:30 pm due to adverse weather conditions. According to PTI, the heavy rainfall has also caused considerable delays and cancellations, affecting travel plans for many passengers.

In response to the exceptionally severe rainfall that hit Delhi this evening, all schools across the city—both public and private—will be closed tomorrow. Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced the decision via X (formerly Twitter), stating, “In light of very heavy rainfall this evening and the forecast of continued heavy rainfall tomorrow, all schools—government and private—will remain closed tomorrow.”
House Collapses In Delhi’s Sabji Mandi Area
At approximately 8:57/58 PM, a house collapsed in the Sabji Mandi area near Robin Cinema in Delhi. The local police station handling the incident is Sabji Mandi. Emergency services responded swiftly, deploying five fire tenders to the scene to manage the situation and mitigate further risks.
