On General Elections and Safeguarding Democracy
The conversation began with a question about the 2024 general elections and their results, asking what a veteran politician from Congress thinks of them and whether they were able to safeguard democracy, as this was the most prominent slogan raised by their party during the election campaigns.
On this Randeep Singh Surjewala articulated his thoughts and expressed, “This is not a question for politicians; you can ask anyone on the street—whether a farmer, a poor person, or a youth—and they will tell you that democracy has won because those who once sought 400-plus seats are now down to 240.”

He further added, “BJP leaders arrogantly claimed they needed more than 400 seats to change the Constitution and reshape the country as they wished. However, over 140 crore people in the country have made it clear that they are not ready to give such a mandate, and to break that arrogance people have brought them down from 400 to 240.”
Could Congress have done much better in the Election?
Further in the conversation, it was discussed that Congress has performed its worst in the last three terms, despite high expectations and Rahul Gandhi’s nationwide Yatra. Shouldn’t the results have been better for Congress?

To this, he replied and said, “Look, we need to do better for Congress and for all of us. The country is bigger than the I.N.D.I.A. Alliance. In this country, whether it is about upholding the Constitution, democracy, eliminating hatred, protecting the rights of the poor, or safeguarding the rights of the middle class, we will always stand firm.”
Congress Brimming with Optimism for Haryana Elections
Moving on in the conversation, it was asked how Congress is feeling about the upcoming elections in Haryana, given the visible energy and optimism among its members. What is Congress’s strategy? Additionally, will Congress contest the Vidhan Sabha elections alone or form a coalition after the Lok Sabha elections?
On this issue he stated, Our faces aren’t saying anything. The affection and love from the people of Haryana are sincere; they don’t conceal their feelings. It’s evident from their faces that Congress will win more than 70 seats in Haryana, thanks to the blessings of the people.”
