The nation, India, we call our home today, has been so because of the bravery that our soldiers in the Indian Army, Navy and Airforce have been displaying n the borders. Fighting for the safety and security for the natio and its citizens while risking their own lives at the frontiers is without a doubt the biggest sacrifice a soldier could give to protect our home. And, as India, today, on July 26, celebrates the Kargil Vijay Diwas to commemorate the lost lives of the brave soldiers who fought the intense battle of Kargil that was fought in the Kargil district in Ladakh and came out victorious against their Pakistani counterparts in the year 1999, on this very day, we bring to you a list of some of the Must-Visit Military Museums across India for you to get a closer look at our country’s history.

Air Force Museum, Palam, Delhi

The history of the Indian air force is on display in the Air Force Museum at Palam Air Force Station, which is located outside of Delhi’s downtown. From the early days of the Indian Air Force, when it flew for the Royal Flying Corps, an air arm of the British Army during World War I, to the Kargil conflict, all of the displays are intricate and convey the tale. All aircraft types, uniforms, and pictures of Air Staff officers and IAF members slain in combat or during military operations are on display in the interior exhibit. The outside galleries feature military vehicles, planes, and heavy weapons.

All of the IAF’s equipment, including actual war trophies, radio detection and range apparatus, and commandeered military vehicles, has also been on display. Older aircraft that are normally inaccessible to the general public can be seen if you are fortunate enough to visit the museum on Annual Air Force Day.

Army Heritage Museum, Shimla, Himachal Pradesh 

Located in the Army cantonment close to Annadale suburb of the city of Shimla in India, the museum houses four different sections that include heritage, Himachal Corner, Shaurya Hall and the green House, while the subsections range from Great Military Leaders, Uniforms of the Indian Army (pre and post-independence), Ethos of Indian Army, Army and the Nation, About UN Peacekeeping forces, Arms, Weapons and ammunition (ancient and modern India), Flags and bands of the Army,  Contribution of Indian Army personnel to sports  to the various awards, honors and recognition provided in the Indian Army, History of Shimla as well as information about the conservation of Flora and Fauna of the region. The museum is also home to a Pakistani letter box, which was brought by the Indian army as a souvenir of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. The museum documents a 5,000-year-old history of wars, warfare, and activities of martial forces dating back from the Mahabharata era to date. Additionally, it displays the history of warriors like Maharana Pratap, Rani Laxmibai, Maharaja Chattrapati Shivaji, Guru Gobind Singh, and Tipu Sultan, along with that of modern warriors, like Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, K.M. Carriappa and many others.

Jaisalmer War Museum, Thaiyat, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan

Jaisalmer War Museum, also known as JWM, is a museum dedicated to the heroic troops of the Indian Armed Forces. These troops fought bravely in some of the most difficult wars in history. It serves as a testament to the immense strength and richness of Indian warriors, as well as their brave achievements and sacrifices throughout the war. Lieutenant General Bobby Mathews oversaw the development of the Indian Army’s Dessert Corps. This is a must-see attraction in Jaisalmer for anyone interested in the country’s military history.

Naval Aviation Museum, Dabolim Airport, Bogmalo Road, Goa

This museum was inaugurated in the year 1998 and is one of India’s only two military museums. In fact, it is the only Naval Aviation Museum in Asia. Situated on the Vasco-Bogmalo road, approximately 6km from the port town of Vasco da Gama, also referred to as Vasco, the Museum of Naval Aviation in Goa is situated atop a hilltop that provides unhindered views of the breathtaking ocean vistas and the well-known Bogmalo beach.

The museum showcases a variety of aircraft operated by the Indian Navy throughout its history. These are exhibited outside at the museum’s open-air gallery. The museum’s interior is designed to resemble the interior of a naval aircraft carrier, the INS Viraat, and includes a number of interesting galleries displaying naval equipment, notable battles, a simulation room, and a large granite plaque honoring those brave souls who gave their lives in service to their country.

Artillery Museum, Deolali, Nashik, Maharashtra

The Artillery Museum, located in Nasik’s Gandhi Nagar Airport Area, was opened to the public in January 2005 by the Regiment of Artillery Association. It is Asia’s largest such museum, showcasing both antique and modern armaments such as the Bofors gun, army combat tanks, radar equipment, and airplanes. The primary attractions are the AOP aircraft and MIG-23UM, as well as ancient artillery pieces such as a wooden catapult from 400 B.C. and pot-de-fet artillery (early iron cannons first used in Europe). They used enormous heavy arrows instead of cannon balls) and a Mughal brass cannon from the First Battle of Panipat, which was fought between Babur and Ibrahim Lodi. The Maratha army’s artillery, Tipu Sultan’s 102-barrel gun Rattanban, and the British East India Company’s artillery are also on display. There’s also the Sexton, a self-propelled gun from WWII. The museum’s current weapons collection includes items from recent wars, such as the T-59 tank from the 1971 Indo-Pak war and the Krishna MK II aircraft. The museum’s buildings were previously utilized by British-Indian forces during World War II. The museum, which spans two levels, includes exhibits military agreements, as well as artwork and photographs of historical events. The museum is closed on Thursdays and public holidays.
