The Arvind Kejriwal government has begun preparations in full swing to control air pollution this winter. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai held a high-level meeting with the relevant departments, including officials from the Environment Department, Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), and the Development Department.
Minister Gopal Rai announced, “On August 21, a ‘Save Environment’ Round Table Conference will be organized with environmental experts at the Delhi Secretariat. During the conference, a winter action plan will be prepared based on the experts’ opinions. This year, our government’s main objective will be to control pollution through public participation.”
The meeting, held with senior officials from the Environment, DPCC, and Development Departments, generated several important suggestions, with key focus points identified. Minister Rai explained, “Work will be centered around dust pollution, vehicle pollution, stubble burning, and garbage burning at various locations. In winter, garbage burning becomes a significant issue in many areas.”
Additionally, Minister Rai emphasized the need to address industrial pollution by ensuring that all registered industrial units in Delhi switch to PNG. The Green War Room and Green Delhi App will be upgraded to enhance communication with the public and ensure timely action on complaints.
Minister Rai also highlighted the focus on pollution hotspots in Delhi, where real-time apportionment studies will help identify the causes of pollution. Furthermore, India’s first E-Waste Eco Park, based on a zero-waste policy, is being constructed in Holambi Kalan village.
Increasing Delhi’s green area, promoting public awareness and participation, and enforcing a ban on firecrackers are additional focus points. The government will also coordinate with the central government and neighboring states for joint efforts to control pollution and implement the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
Minister Rai conveyed that the ‘Save Environment’ Round Table Conference on August 21 aims to develop a comprehensive winter action plan based on expert suggestions. “The Delhi government will take necessary steps to control pollution sources, helping to identify and mitigate various pollution factors in the city,” he stated.
