West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded that the tragic murder case of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital be expedited through a fast-track court. Expressing her profound distress over the incident, she stressed the urgent need for justice and vowed to ensure that those responsible face swift punishment.
“This is an incredibly painful incident. Those involved must be held accountable without delay. We are pushing for this case to be fast-tracked to expedite the judicial process. It is shocking that such a crime could occur despite the presence of nurses and security staff in the hospital,” Banerjee remarked.

The Chief Minister disclosed that the victim’s parents suspect that someone within the hospital may have been involved, leading to the dismissal of key officials, including the Principal, MSVP, HOD, and the ASP. Comprehensive investigative measures have been initiated, with teams from the forensic department, video analysis units, and the dog squad actively working on the case. Banerjee also stated that if the Kolkata Police do not resolve the case by Sunday, it will be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Sanjoy Roy, who is accused of the horrific crime, was not an official hospital employee but served as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police. Roy was frequently seen on the hospital premises and had access to various departments. Initially, he had been a part of the police disaster management group before being reassigned to the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College. Reports suggest that Roy was involved in illicit activities, such as charging fees to secure hospital admissions for patients.
Despite not being a full-fledged police officer, Roy leveraged his connections to stay in police barracks and often posed as a member of the Kolkata Police. According to reports, Roy confessed to the crime without showing any remorse, even saying, “Hang me if you want.” Authorities also discovered his mobile phone was filled with explicit content.
Roy’s arrest followed after CCTV footage captured him entering the hospital’s emergency building around 4 am on Friday, shortly before the victim’s body was discovered in the same location. A Bluetooth headset found near the victim’s body matched Roy’s phone, further implicating him. Although Roy attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes, police were able to retrieve bloodstains on his shoes. Roy is currently in police custody until August 23.
The brutal murder and rape of the doctor have sparked widespread protests across the country, raising critical concerns about the safety of healthcare professionals. In response to the public outcry, the principal of the medical college has resigned. The incident has also ignited debates over the security protocols that allowed such unrestricted access to the hospital at all hours.
