Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer arrested for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has confessed to the crime and pleaded with the police to hang him, sources told India Today. During his interrogation following his arrest on Saturday, Roy reportedly told the police, “Mujhe fansi de dijiye” (Hang me, please).
Roy also admitted to previous violent acts against his mother, sister, and wife. According to police sources, his mother-in-law had earlier filed a complaint at Kalighat Police Station, accusing him of physically abusing his wife.
The body of a post-graduate trainee doctor was discovered in the seminar room of a West Bengal government hospital on Friday morning. Sanjoy Roy was arrested at his home on Saturday and charged with rape and murder under sections 64 and 103 of the BNS.
Roy, who worked at the police outpost at RG Kar Hospital and had access to all departments, was arrested after CCTV footage showed him entering the building where the doctor was later found murdered.
The police have taken his mobile phone and plan to extract data from it on Tuesday. An official told India Today, “We will soon retrieve the data from his phone. In addition to the doctors, we have also questioned and collected statements from five police officers who were stationed at the hospital.”
The police have reported that the accused was reportedly addicted to pornography and known as a womanizer, according to PTI.
“The content on his mobile phone was very disturbing and violent. We are concerned about his mental state, as watching such material is quite unnatural,” a police officer said.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee warned the Kolkata police that if they do not solve the case by Sunday, August 18, it will be handed over to the CBI.
