The Palghar Police in Maharashtra have arrested a man who allegedly tricked multiple women into marriage and then stole their valuables. The man, Firoz Niyazi Sheikh, is said to have robbed over 20 women of their money and jewelry. The case came to light when one of the victims filed a complaint at the Nalasopara police station.
According to the police, Sheikh created fake online profiles to target mostly widowed women. He would meet them through online platforms and then disappear after taking large sums of money from them.
To catch him, the police initially had no photos or contact details of Sheikh, as he frequently changed his phone number. They decided to use his own tactics against him. Officials created a fake female profile on an online platform and started a conversation with him. Pretending to be a woman, they arranged to meet him in Kalyan and arrested him there.
The police recovered ₹3 lakh from Sheikh and also seized ATMs, chequebooks, six mobile phones, laptops, documents, and gold and silver jewelry. On Saturday, he was brought before a court and remanded to custody for two days. The investigation is ongoing.
