In a veiled reference to the brutal rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday called for stringent punishment for those who commit such “monstrous deeds.” Speaking during his 11th Independence Day address from the Red Fort, PM Modi emphasized the need for state governments to take crimes against women seriously and impose severe penalties to deter such criminals.
“I would like to express my pain once again, from the Red Fort today. As a society, we must seriously consider the atrocities against women occurring in our country—there is widespread outrage about this. I can feel this outrage. The nation, society, and state governments must address these issues seriously. It is crucial to ensure a swift investigation and impose strict punishment on those committing these monstrous acts to restore public confidence,” PM Modi stated.
Although he did not directly reference the specific case, PM Modi highlighted the importance of publicizing the punishment for such crimes, ensuring that criminals understand the severe consequences, including the possibility of capital punishment.
“I would also like to say that while rapes and incidents of violence against women are widely discussed, the punishment for such heinous acts often goes unnoticed, relegated to the background. It is essential to have extensive discussions about the punishment to make sure those who commit these sins understand that it can lead to the death penalty. It is crucial to instill this fear,” he added, as reported by ANI.
A postgraduate trainee doctor was tragically murdered last week in a Kolkata state-run hospital. The incident occurred during her night shift when she rested in the seminar hall of the hospital. Her body was found the next day.
The victim was brutally raped and beaten to death. Her post-mortem report revealed severe genital injuries, a crushed throat cartilage, and blood oozing from her eyes, mouth, and private areas. The investigation into this horrific crime has been taken over by the CBI.
