The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made significant progress in a human trafficking case, announcing the arrest of two Bangladeshi nationals who were absconding. Mohammed Sajjid Haldar and Idris were apprehended in Karnataka, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to 14.
According to the NIA, the two individuals had evaded capture but were finally located and arrested on Thursday night in Karnataka with the help of the state’s Internal Security Division. The investigation revealed that both Haldar and Idris had illegally entered India through Benapole on the Indo-Bangladesh border. Haldar had established a Waste Collection and Segregation unit in Bengaluru’s K Chanasandra area, employing other Bangladeshi nationals. Similarly, Idris had set up a similar unit in Anadapura, Bengaluru, where he had provided accommodations for over 20 Bangladeshi families suspected of being trafficked.
The NIA initiated the case in November 2023 following information about individuals in Karnataka having connections with traffickers in Assam, Tripura, and neighboring countries. The investigation uncovered a large network of traffickers smuggling individuals into India through the Indo-Bangladesh border. The accused were also involved in producing fake Aadhar cards for the victims.
Previously, the NIA had arrested and charged 12 Bangladeshi nationals under various sections of the IPC and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. The agency continues its efforts to dismantle trafficking networks operating along the Indo-Bangladesh border.
