Harvest festival Onam is mostly observed by Malayalees. The Panchangam, which happens on the 22nd Nakshatra Thiruvonam of the Malayalam calendar’s month Chingam and falls between August and September on the Gregorian calendar, is the basis for the date. The first month in the Malayalam calendar is called Chingam.
The Malayalam New Year is celebrated over a 10-day period and comes to an end with Thiruvonam.
On August 30, crowds gathered in Tripunithura to watch a huge ceremonial procession that featured caparisoned elephants, vibrant floats, folk art performances like Kathakali and Mohiniyattom, and percussion ensembles like Pandimelam and Panchavayam that portrayed historical and mythological scenarios.
A variety of ceremonies are used to commemorate Onam, and everyone participates in them. The devout flocked to temples decked up in flowers early in the morning to offer prayers to celebrate the occasion.
To honour the memory of the mythical King Mahabali, who according to mythology is claimed to have visited Kerala on an auspicious day, the 10-day celebration is held.
The event is an opportunity for loved ones and friends to gather together and enjoy traditional activities including sports, singing, dancing, and a lavish meal called “Onasadya.”
People participate in events like tug of war, boat races, and flower displays as well as decorate their homes with “Rangoli” to celebrate the celebrations.
