PM Modi’s ‘Sarpanch Sahab’ Remark Delights Indian Hockey Team After Paris Olympics Bronze

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian men’s hockey team on their bronze medal win at the 2024 Paris Olympics with a light-hearted phone call that brought laughter to the team. Captain Harmanpreet Singh’s performance, including scoring twice in the 2-1 victory over Spain, earned the team their second consecutive Olympic medal and a return to the podium for the first time in 52 years.

During the call, PM Modi humorously addressed Harmanpreet as ‘Sarpanch sahab,’ a nickname reflecting his excellent leadership. This playful gesture from the Prime Minister left the team members laughing and in high spirits.

The match, held at Stade Yves-du-Manoir, saw Spain take an early lead with a penalty shot by Marc Miralles in the 18th minute. Harmanpreet Singh then leveled the score with a crucial penalty corner just before halftime. He added another goal in the 33rd minute, securing his position as the tournament’s top scorer with 10 goals.

India’s defense, led by PR Sreejesh, who was making his final appearance for the national team, held strong in the second half. Despite Spain’s persistent attacks, Sreejesh made several key saves, ensuring India’s victory.

PM Modi praised the team’s achievement and their impressive performance against Great Britain. He also lauded Sreejesh’s contributions, highlighting the significance of his final tournament.

The bronze medal marks India’s second consecutive Olympic medal in hockey, a testament to their resurgence after a long hiatus. The team now has 14 Olympic medals, continuing the legacy of their dominance in the sport from 1928 to 1956.
