Union Minority Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the Lok Sabha. This bill aims to amend the Waqf Act, 1995, and intends to address issues concerning the authority of State Waqf Boards and the Central Waqf Council, as well as improve the registration and survey of Waqf properties and tackle encroachments.

In Parliament, Akhilesh Yadav of Samajwadi party, addressed the introduction of the bill, stating, “The bill being introduced is part of a well-thought-out political strategy. When there is a democratic process in place, why is there a need for nominations? In other religious bodies, there are no non-community members involved.”
He added saying, “I do not want to flip through the pages of history to see what a district officer did at one place, which now affects future generations. The truth is, the BJP is bringing forward this bill to appease its disheartened and narrow-minded supporters. Speaker, I had told you that you are the guardian of democracy, and I have heard that even your rights are being encroached upon in this lobby. We must fight for your rights.”

In response, Amit Shah countered, “I disagree. No chairman has exclusive authority over just the opposition; it belongs to the entire house. Such statements are not acceptable. You are not the protector of the chairman’s authority.”
