West Bengal BJP And CM Clash Over RG Kar Medical College Vandalism

West Bengal BJP President Sukanta Majumdar alleged on Thursday that the recent vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was an attempt to destroy evidence. Majumdar claimed that 2,000 to 2,500 individuals entered the medical college late at night, beating and threatening doctors, while the police remained silent.

He criticized the Trinamool Congress-led government for failing to maintain law and order in the state, stating, “If a state government is unable to maintain law and order in its capital, then it has no right to remain in power.” He added, “There is no law and order in West Bengal. 2,000 to 2,500 goons barged into the medical college late at night. Doctors were beaten up and threatened; the police remained silent. Attempts were made to destroy evidence. I will visit RG Kar Medical College tomorrow to protest.”

In response, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the Left of colluding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to create unrest in the state. She claimed, “The Left and BJP want to create unrest in Bengal and have joined forces to do so,” referring to the vandalism at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata on Wednesday.

Banerjee asserted that the individuals responsible for the vandalism were not connected to the student movement at RG Kar Medical College but were outsiders affiliated with the BJP and DYFI. She said, “The people who vandalized RG Kar Hospital yesterday and created this ruckus are not connected to the student movement of RG Kar Medical College. They are outsiders; I have seen several videos showing some holding BJP flags and others with DYFI flags.”

The vandalism occurred on August 14 when a mob entered the RG Kar Hospital campus, damaging the protest site, vehicles, and public property. Security officials had to intervene to disperse the crowd.

This incident follows the death of a post-graduate trainee doctor on August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim’s family alleges that she was raped and murdered, prompting nationwide protests by doctors and medical communities.
