Indian travel vlogger Deepanshu Sangwan, who runs the popular YouTube channel Nomadic Indian with over 1.7 million subscribers, has recently experienced an incident of racism due to his appearance in South Korea.
In a clip from his vlog posted on X (formerly Twitter), he discusses the racial discrimination he allegedly faced.
In the video, Sangwan described the “uncomfortable stares” and feelings of “alienation” he experienced due to his appearance. While recounting this bad instance, he remarked ”We’re Indians, we have brown skin—what can we do? We were born this way.”
However, he acknowledged that racism is not exclusive to South Korea, noting that discrimination occurs in India as well, but feels it is often less direct there. “Yes, people of African descent may face challenges in India, but it’s not as widespread. We don’t give dirty looks to others,” emphasised Sangwan.

Later, he also argumentatively said that we can make fun of Koreans too, as they have borrowed much of their culture from Chinese traditions and other influences.
Further, he advised his viewers to be prepared for such incidents when visiting South Korea to avoid being caught off guard. He also mentioned that it’s not only people with brown skin who stand out, saying, “If you’re white, for them you are an exotic thing.”

Once this video went viral, many users reacted differently to this incident, with one user backing guy’s incident & saying ”A friend who worked at Samsung went to Seoul for 3 months. He told me that no Korean would sit next to him during the lunch break. Some clubs won’t even allow non-Asian or white people in.”
Another talking about casteism said “Indians can realize how horrible casteism is only when they get discriminated against by other country people.”
But, third user commented about treatment of foreigners in India said ”The sad thing is that when foreigners visit India, we treat them like royalty, but when Indians go abroad, they often face racism.”

However, another recounting positive experience said ”Sorry dude, I worked in Seoul and that was 11 years ago and didn’t face any racism. In fact, they were very much sweeter than other countries. Yes, I have seen racism in Thailand. If you bargain there, some of them abuse you.”
