IndiGo Airlines has launched its ‘NextGen EFB’ program, which will provide Apple iPads to all ATR pilots to enhance operational efficiency and streamline processes. This initiative is aimed at reducing the paper weight in ATR cockpits while equipping pilots with cutting-edge technology to improve their pre-flight preparations and overall flight operations.
As part of the ‘NextGen EFB’ program, IndiGo will supply its ATR pilots with the 9th generation Apple iPad, a device known for its speed, efficiency, and advanced features. The iPad is powered by the A13 Bionic chip and boasts a 10.2-inch Retina display, providing pilots with a bright and responsive tool for their in-flight tasks. “The ‘NextGen EFB’ program equips pilots with faster, more efficient, and brighter iPad 9th generation devices, featuring the powerful A13 Bionic chip and a 10.2-inch Retina display. This empowers pilots with pre-loaded documents, charts, and an onboard performance tool for precise aircraft monitoring,” IndiGo stated in a recent press release.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in IndiGo’s efforts to digitize and modernize its operations. The airline first introduced Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) to its ATR fleet in 2020. This technology allowed for the removal of approximately 15 kilograms of paper from each cockpit, contributing to both operational efficiency and environmental sustainability. Since the implementation of EFBs, IndiGo has successfully operated around 450,000 flights using this digital solution.

The Apple iPad 9th generation, which will be provided to IndiGo’s ATR pilots, comes with a 10.2-inch LED backlit Retina display with IPS technology. It is equipped with the A13 Bionic chip and runs on iPadOS 17, ensuring a smooth and responsive user experience. The device offers 64 GB of internal storage and is available in both Wi-Fi and cellular models. Additionally, it features an 8 MP rear camera and a 12 MP front camera, making it a versatile tool for both work and communication.
IndiGo’s decision to provide these iPads is part of a broader trend in the aviation industry to adopt digital tools that enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impact. By equipping its pilots with the latest technology, IndiGo is not only improving its operational capabilities but also setting a standard for other airlines to follow.
The 9th generation iPad, which was discontinued by Apple following the ‘Let Loose’ event in May this year, remains a powerful and reliable device. Its inclusion in IndiGo’s ‘NextGen EFB’ program underscores the airline’s commitment to providing its pilots with the best possible tools for their work, ensuring that they are well-equipped to handle the demands of modern aviation.
