Viral: Mumbai-Bound Passenger Arrested After Bomb Remark During Security Check at Cochin International Airport

A seemingly casual remark about a bomb made during a routine security check at Cochin International Airport led to the arrest of a Mumbai-bound passenger, creating a significant disruption in airport operations. The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) reported that the incident occurred on Sunday when Manoj Kumar, 42, was preparing to board an Air India flight to Mumbai.

The situation unfolded when Kumar made an alarming comment to a Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officer at the x-ray baggage inspection counter. According to a statement released by CIAL, Kumar asked the officer, “Is there any bomb in my bag?” This offhand remark immediately raised concerns, prompting swift action from the airport’s security team.

In response to the potential threat, the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) was called in to conduct a thorough inspection of both Kumar’s cabin and checked baggage. The inspection, which was carried out with meticulous care, ultimately revealed no explosive devices or any other dangerous items.

Despite the absence of an actual threat, Kumar was handed over to local law enforcement for further investigation, as is standard protocol in such situations. The Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) was also convened to assess the severity of the incident. After a detailed evaluation, the BTAC classified the threat as “non-specific,” meaning that while the threat was not credible, it still necessitated a comprehensive security response.

Following the BTAC’s conclusion, airport operations resumed as normal, and the flight to Mumbai departed on schedule. However, the incident served as a reminder of the heightened security measures in place at airports, especially with the upcoming Independence Day celebrations.

CIAL has issued an advisory urging all passengers to arrive at the airport well in advance of their scheduled flights to avoid delays due to the increased security protocols. The advisory also emphasized the importance of refraining from making any remarks or jokes related to security threats, as such comments are taken very seriously and can lead to severe consequences.
