What Is The Blue Aadhaar Card? Find Out Who Needs To Issue It

Aadhaar serves as a crucial KYC document today, essential for accessing government subsidies and benefits from a variety of welfare schemes. Moreover, it holds significance as a key identity verification document across multiple sectors, encompassing critical citizen information such as full name, permanent address, and date of birth. This data is linked to a distinctive 12-digit number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

It was in 2018, the UIDAI unveiled the ‘Baal Aadhaar’ card designed specifically for children under the age of five. The card is distinguishable by its blue color, in contrast to the standard white Aadhaar card issued to adults. This specialized card also features a unique 12-digit identification number assigned to children under the age of five.

Does It Requires Biometric Data?

Unlike adults, children are not required to provide biometric data for the issuance of the card. Instead, their UID is generated based on demographic information and a facial photograph linked to their parents’ UID. However, once the child reaches the age of five, they must update their biometric data, including fingerprints, iris scans, and facial photographs. This update is also required at the age of fifteen to prevent the card from becoming invalid. The biometric data update for teenage Aadhaar cardholders is free of charge.

According to UIDAI, parents can apply for a Baal Aadhaar for their newborns using either the birth certificate or hospital discharge slip as valid enrollment documents. Additionally, they can use their children’s school ID for Baal Aadhaar enrollment purposes.

How id it helpful?

The card provides access to numerous government assistance programs and facilitates the distribution of EWS scholarships, helping the government discern between fraudulent and genuine students. Additionally, many schools now require the presentation of Blue Aadhaar cards during the admission process.

Here’s a step-by-step guide for registering for the Blue Aadhaar card:
