Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended heartfelt congratulations to the Indian hockey team today, following their impressive achievement of securing a second consecutive bronze medal at the Olympic Games. In a thrilling third-place playoff match, India defeated Spain 2-1. During a phone call with the players, PM Modi expressed his admiration and pride.

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh delivered a standout performance, scoring both of India’s goals in the 30th and 33rd minutes. Spain’s sole goal came from a penalty stroke by their captain, Marc Miralles, in the 18th minute.

“A feat that will be cherished for generations to come,” PM Modi remarked in a post on X.

He continued, “The Indian Hockey team shines bright at the Olympics, bringing home the Bronze medal. This is even more special because it is their second consecutive medal at the Olympics.”

PM Modi praised the team’s success, highlighting it as a triumph of skill, perseverance, and teamwork. “Their success is a triumph of skill, perseverance and team spirit. They showed immense grit and resilience. Congratulations to the players. Every Indian has an emotional connection with hockey and this accomplishment will make the sport even more popular among the youth of our nation,” he said.

The medal also marks a poignant farewell for veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, known as ‘The Great Indian Wall of Indian Hockey’, who concluded his illustrious 18-year career with this match. In the day’s final, Germany will face off against the Netherlands.
