Breaking made its Olympic debut in Paris, greeted with both excitement and a bit of confusion. However, fans shouldn’t expect to see b-boys and b-girls at the Olympics again anytime soon.
Will breaking be part of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics? Breaking is not on the list of sports for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, and according to Zack Slusser, vice president of Breaking for Gold USA and USA Dance, it’s unlikely to be included in the 2032 Brisbane Games either. The primary reason is funding.
“It was a miracle that we were even in Paris to begin with,” Slusser commented. Nevertheless, for the breaking community, just being part of the Paris Olympics is a major milestone, even if the sport doesn’t return in future Games.
Breakers from the U.S. and around the globe are hopeful that their Olympic debut will bring increased visibility and more resources to the breaking community, thanks to support from stakeholders and financial backing.
“The exposure to influential people who can bring meaningful change to our community and platform will be crucial,” Slusser said, adding, “This visibility could finally give us sustainability and help elevate our platform.”
While it would be fantastic to see breaking return to the Olympics, Slusser emphasized that the focus will now shift back to community efforts and making the most of this opportunity from within.
While breaking didn’t make it into the 2028 Olympic program, five other sports that weren’t featured in Paris will be included:
Cricket
Flag football
Baseball and softball
Lacrosse
Squash
Flag football and squash will be making their Olympic debuts. Cricket is returning to the Olympics for the first time since 1900, while lacrosse hasn’t been played at the Games since 1908. Baseball and softball, which were dropped after the 2008 Olympics, briefly returned for the Tokyo Games.
The modern pentathlon was at risk of being cut but managed to stay in the program by replacing the horse jumping event with obstacle course racing. Boxing is confirmed to be part of the Los Angeles Games, though it currently lacks a governing body recognized by the IOC.
