The Paris Olympics 2024 has not only generated buzz around the sporting events and the grand opening ceremony but also over a contentious advertisement that has gained international attention for negative reasons. This particular ad, which highlights Google’s AI capabilities, has gone viral, drawing criticism on several fronts.
The advertisement in question demonstrates Google’s AI technology in action, showcasing its ability to produce TV commercials with human-like audio and high-resolution visuals. Despite this, the ad has been poorly received by viewers who feel it lacks the personal touch and creativity typical of authentic advertisements. The depiction of a child in the ad has sparked debates about the potential for AI to replace human creativity, raising concerns about the impact of technology on artistic expression and the future of creative fields.

In its pursuit to advance AI technologies, Google appears to have overlooked the critical role of human creativity. Competing with AI products like ChatGPT and Llama through its Gemini platform, Google has embedded AI into nearly all aspects of its services, from emails to search functions, while gradually minimizing human involvement in technology development.
A Google spokesperson explained in a statement that the company views “AI as a valuable tool for enhancing human creativity, but it can never replace it.” The statement further clarifies, “Our goal was to create an authentic story celebrating Team USA. It features a real-life track enthusiast and her father, and aims to demonstrate how the Gemini app can offer a starting point, thought starter, or early draft for those seeking inspiration for their writing.”
Social media users have voiced strong objections to AI-generated ads, finding the concept unsettling. Google, while recognizing the value of AI, acknowledges that it cannot completely replace the unique creativity and personal touch that humans contribute.
Gemini, Google’s cutting-edge AI model, has been integrated into Google Search tools, enhancing search results with greater accuracy. As for its potential in advertising, Gemini is evolving quickly and is expected to soon have the capability to generate its own ads and produce human-like audio.
