Hockey India has announced significant cash prizes for the bronze medal-winning players of the Indian men’s hockey team from the Paris 2024 Olympics. Each player will receive ₹15 lakh, while the support staff will be awarded ₹7.5 lakh each. This gesture recognizes the team’s remarkable achievement of securing back-to-back Olympic medals, a feat not accomplished in over five decades.
The announcement follows the Indian team’s historic victory over Spain with a 2-1 scoreline, led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, who scored twice. This win marked India’s second consecutive Olympic medal in men’s hockey, a milestone not reached since the 1972 Munich Olympics.
Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey praised the team’s performance, highlighting their dedication and resilience. “This victory is a testament to the hard work and determination of our players and support staff. Winning consecutive Olympic medals is a significant achievement and showcases the resurgence of Indian hockey. The cash prizes are a small token of our appreciation for their excellence. We also congratulate PR Sreejesh on his illustrious career. His contributions will inspire future generations.”
The final match, held at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium, was particularly poignant as it marked the farewell of legendary goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who had announced that this would be his last Olympic Games.
The game itself was a rollercoaster of emotions. Despite a setback early in the second quarter with a penalty stroke conversion by Spain’s Marc Miralles, India equalized with a penalty corner goal by Harmanpreet Singh just before halftime. Singh then scored again in the 33rd minute to give India a crucial lead.
India displayed resilience and strategic defense to protect their lead, even as Spain mounted a strong offensive in the final minutes. With only seconds remaining, Sreejesh’s crucial saves, including a dramatic deflection and a successful clearance of a penalty corner, secured the bronze medal for India.
The match showcased a mix of tactical play and emotional intensity, with India holding firm against Spain’s desperate attempts to equalize. This victory is celebrated not just for its historical significance but also for the spirit and teamwork displayed by the Indian hockey squad.
