The Indian hockey team has entered the semi-finals of the Paris Olympics after a thrilling shootout victory against Great Britain. India played more than 40 minutes with one player short after Amit Rohidas received a red card for hitting a Great Britain player, William Calnan, in the face.
Shortly after Rohidas was sent off, India took a 1-0 lead. However, Great Britain equalized just before halftime, making it 1-1. The score remained tied at 1-1 until the end of regular play. Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored for India from a penalty corner, marking his seventh goal at Paris 2024.
PR Sreejesh was a standout performer, making multiple saves during regular play and forcing two misses from Great Britain in the shootout.
This victory follows India’s remarkable win over Australia in their last Pool B match, their first Olympic win against the Kookaburras in 52 years. India’s last victory over Australia was at the 1972 Munich Olympics, before the switch to astro-turf.
