World champion Noah Lyles clinched victory in 9.79 seconds to claim the Men’s 100m gold. He began slow but picked up speed towards the end to defeat Thompson by five-thousandths of a second, setting a new personal best of 9.79 seconds.
“This is the one I wanted. It was a tough battle with amazing opponents,” he remarked.
The closest Olympic 100m finish in modern history. His victory was only confirmed after a photo-finish, with fellow American Kerley taking bronze in 9.81 seconds.
Kerley’s time was a thousandth of a second faster than Akani Simbine of South Africa, who finished fourth and set a new national record of 9.82 seconds.
Defending champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs of Italy, who was heavily strapped, finished fifth in 9.85 seconds. Such was the quality of the race that even the eighth-placed Oblique Seville of Jamaica clocked 9.91 seconds.
“Everyone came prepared for the fight, and I wanted to prove that I’m the man among them all, the wolf among wolves,” Lyles said.
