Paris Olympics 2024: Ramita Jindal Qualifies, Elavenil Valarivan Eliminated in Women’s 10m Air Rifle Event

India’s shooter Ramita Jindal qualified for the final, while Elavenil Valarivan suffered another heartbreak in the women’s 10m Air Rifle event at the ongoing Paris Olympics on Sunday at the National Shooting Center.

Ramita finished in fifth place with a score of 631.5 and will compete in the final on Monday. Valarivan, wearing Bib No. 1441, fired her shots from lane 24, while Ramita, wearing 1436, occupied lane number 37.

Ramita started the event dominantly, scoring 10.5 followed by a perfect 10.9. Elavenil began with a 10.6 and 10.7. However, Ramita’s performance started to dip during the first series, slipping out of the top 20 and ending with a score of 104.3. Elavenil, on the other hand, finished the first series with a score of 105.8, placing her inside the top five.

In the second series, Ramita continued hitting near 10 and moved to the eighth spot, while Valarivan maintained her consistency within the top five. Elavenil moved up to second place during this series, appearing well set for the remainder of the event. However, Ramita’s lower 10 scores affected her positioning.

As the event proceeded, Ramita gradually made a comeback, while Elavenil struggled with her final shots, leading to her downfall. Ramita struck 10.4 and accumulated 105.7 points in the final round, surpassing Oceanne Muller to secure her place in the final.

Earlier, on the opening day, Elavenil experienced defeat alongside Sandeep Singh in the 10m air rifle mixed team qualification event. Only four out of 28 teams advanced to the knockout stages, including the gold medal match for the top two teams and the bronze medal match for teams ranked third and fourth.

Despite their efforts, Elavenil and Sandeep finished in 12th place with 626.3 points, with Elavenil scoring 312.6 points and Sandeep scoring 313.7 points, falling short of India’s first medal at the Games.
