India’s Sift Kaur Samra and Anjum Moudgil were unable to advance to the women’s 50m rifle final, as they were eliminated during the qualification round at Paris 2024. Sift, making her Olympic debut at 22, scored 575-22x, placing her 31st, just one spot from bottom. Moudgil ranked 18th with a score of 584-26x. Only the top eight shooters will compete in the final tomorrow.
USA’s Sagen Maddalena and Chinese shooter Zhang Qiongyue set an Olympic Qualification Record score of 593, according to Olympics.com.
At the Asian Games 2023, Samra won gold in the event with a world record of 469.6. She also secured titles in the 50m rifle 3 positions at both the individual and team events at the World University Games last year.
Moudgil, 30, competed in Tokyo 2020 but did not make the final. She won a silver medal in the 10m air rifle event at the 2018 World Championships.

Earlier in the day, Swapnil Kusale won the bronze medal in the men’s 50m rifle 3) event at the ongoing Paris Olympics, becoming the first Indian shooter to win a medal in this event. With this medal, India has now secured three bronze medals in shooting at the Paris Olympics. Previously, India’s best performance in shooting at the Olympics was at the 2012 London Games, where Vijay Kumar won silver in the men’s 25m rapid pistol event and Gagan Narang won bronze in the men’s 10m air rifle event.
India’s first shooting medal was won by Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who secured a silver in men’s double trap at the 2004 Athens Olympics. This was followed by Abhinav Bindra’s historic gold in the men’s 10m air rifle at the Beijing Olympics, which was also the country’s first-ever individual gold medal in any sport.
