Paris Olympics 2024: Where Does India Stand After Medal Tally?

The 2024 Paris Olympics have concluded, with India securing a total of 6 medals—1 silver and 5 bronze—placing them 71st in the overall medal standings. This is a notable drop from their 48th place finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where they earned 7 medals, including 1 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze.

India began their campaign with high hopes of reaching a double-digit medal count but fell short due to several fourth-place finishes and the disappointing disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from her gold medal match.

India opened their medal tally at the 2024 Paris Olympics with shooter Manu Bhaker, who overcame the disappointment of her pistol malfunction at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to claim a bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event.

Manu was also instrumental in India’s second medal, partnering with Sarabjot Singh to win bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team event after defeating South Korea. She made history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win two medals at the same Olympic Games in the post-independence era.

India’s third medal in shooting came from Swapnil Kusale, who earned bronze in the men’s 50m rifle three-position event, marking the first time an Indian has won in this category.

India’s historically successful sport, hockey, made its return to the Olympic podium after a 2-1 victory over Spain in the bronze medal match. This win secured India’s fourth medal at the Paris Olympics and marked their 13th overall Olympic medal in hockey.

India’s “golden boy,” Neeraj Chopra, while unable to defend his gold medal from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, still secured a place on the podium by winning the silver in the men’s javelin throw, earning India their fifth medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

India’s sixth and final medal in Paris was a historic one. Aman Sehrawat, just 21 years old, claimed bronze in the men’s 57kg freestyle wrestling event after defeating Puerto Rico’s Dorian Toi Cruz 13-5, becoming the youngest Indian ever to win a medal at the Summer Olympics.
