Vinesh Phogat’s Fate In Limbo As CAS Denies Jordan Chiles’ Bronze Medal Appeal

On Monday, August 12, USA Gymnastics announced that Jordan Chiles’ request to reinstate her gold medal, which was awarded after the women’s floor exercise finals on August 5, has been denied by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

Initially, Chiles finished fifth in the final behind Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea. After coach Cecile Lendi appealed, citing that Chiles’ difficulty level and a split leap in the air deserved higher marks, Chiles was promoted to third place and awarded the bronze. However, the bronze medal was later rescinded after CAS ruled in favor of Barbosu and Maneca-Voinea.

USA Gymnastics shared on Instagram that the CAS decision was final, stating, “USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented.” The statement continued, “We are deeply disappointed by this decision and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure just scoring, placement, and medal awarding for Jordan.”

Following Chiles’ case, Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat is also awaiting a CAS decision. Phogat was sent home from the Olympics after being found 100 grams over the limit for the 50kg Women’s Wrestling category. She has contested her disqualification and is waiting for a verdict on her appeal.
