ISRO To Begin Unmanned Flight Trials for Gaganyaan Mission

ISRO To Begin Unmanned Flight Trials for Gaganyaan Mission

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has initiated preparations for unmanned flight tests in pursuit of the Gaganyaan mission, according to an announcement made by the agency on Saturday. In a statement posted on ISRO’s official social media platform, it was revealed that preparations are underway for the Flight Test Vehicle Abort Mission-1 (TV-D1), which is an integral part of the Gaganyaan mission and serves as a crucial demonstration of the Crew Escape System’s performance.

ISRO highlighted that the successful execution of this test flight will serve as a significant milestone, paving the way for subsequent qualification tests and unmanned missions, ultimately culminating in the inaugural Gaganyaan mission featuring Indian astronauts.

The agency also provided details about the First Crew Module for the Gaganyaan test flight, disclosing that the development of the first Test Vehicle (TV-D1) is nearing completion. This Test Vehicle is a single-stage liquid rocket specifically developed for the abort mission. Its payloads include the Crew Module (CM) and Crew Escape Systems (CES) equipped with fast-acting solid motors, along with the CM fairing (CMF) and Interface Adapters. The primary objective of this flight is to simulate abort conditions during the ascent trajectory, corresponding to a Mach number of 1.2, which mirrors conditions expected in the Gaganyaan mission.

Additionally, ISRO emphasized that the Crew Module underwent a series of rigorous electrical tests at its facility in Bengaluru, including an acoustic test, before being dispatched to SDSC-SHAR on August 13 as part of the ongoing preparations.
