Starliner Issues Could Extend Sunita Williams’ Space Mission Until February 2025

NASA’s mission involving astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams, currently aboard the International Space Station (ISS) on a Boeing Starliner mission, is facing a potential delay. What was initially scheduled as a 10-day mission could now extend until February 2025 due to unforeseen technical problems with the spacecraft.

The Boeing Starliner, which launched in June, was meant to conduct a critical test flight before receiving certification for regular crewed missions. However, the spacecraft has experienced several issues, including propulsion system failures and helium leaks, which have pushed back the mission timeline and led NASA to explore alternative return options.

Given the ongoing technical difficulties with Starliner, NASA is considering the use of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon to bring the astronauts back to Earth. If this alternative is pursued, Williams and Wilmore may remain aboard the ISS until February 2025. This extension would allow time to either repair the Starliner or wait for a suitable opportunity to return using Crew Dragon.

Since arriving at the ISS on June 6, Williams and Wilmore have been engaged in various scientific experiments and daily operations. Despite the mission extension, all nine astronauts currently on the ISS are safe and have ample food and supplies. The primary focus remains on resolving the Starliner issues and finding a solution for the astronauts’ return as soon as possible.

Sunita Williams, a seasoned astronaut on her third space mission, has been involved in crucial research during her time at the ISS. Her work includes studies on fluid dynamics and plant growth in microgravity, which are vital for future space explorations and the potential establishment of off-Earth habitats.

NASA and Boeing are actively addressing the technical challenges with the Starliner. The mission’s duration will depend on the resolution of these issues, with safety and a viable return plan being top priorities.
