In the latest chapter of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) all-rounder Abhishek Sharma notched up a significant milestone by crossing the 1,000-run mark in IPL cricket. The 23-year-old achieved this feat during SRH’s clash against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad, showcasing his prowess with the bat.
Abhishek contributed a valuable 29 runs in 20 balls, including two boundaries and two sixes, during this match. His innings had a strike rate of 145.00, underlining his ability to score quick runs and change the momentum of the game.
In his IPL journey spanning 50 matches, Abhishek Sharma has accumulated 1,017 runs in 48 innings at an average of 24.21. His strike rate of over 142 further highlights his aggressive style of play. Among these runs, 63 came in three matches while representing the Delhi Capitals, a team he played for in the 2018 season before joining SRH in 2019.
For SRH, Abhishek has been a consistent performer, amassing 954 runs in 47 matches at an average of 23.26 and a strike rate of 140.5. This includes five half-centuries and a top score of 75. Notably, his best IPL season was in 2022, where he piled up 426 runs in 14 matches at an average of 30.43 and a strike rate of over 133, featuring two fifties.
In the ongoing IPL 2024 season, Abhishek has continued his good form, currently standing as the seventh-highest run-scorer. He has amassed 124 runs in three matches at an impressive average of 41.33 and a blistering strike rate of 200, including one half-century. His highest score so far this season is 63, showcasing his ability to anchor an innings or accelerate when needed.
Despite Abhishek’s efforts, SRH faced a tough challenge in their recent match against GT after opting to bat first upon winning the toss. None of the SRH batters managed to convert starts into substantial scores. Abhishek Sharma’s 29 off 20 balls, along with Abdul Samad’s 29 off 14 balls, were the standout performances as SRH posted a total of 162/8 in their allotted 20 overs.
GT’s bowling attack was led by Mohit Sharma, who claimed impressive figures of 3/25. Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, Umesh Yadav, and Noor Ahmed also chipped in with a wicket each to restrict SRH.
In response, GT had a solid start but lost early wickets, including Wriddhiman Saha (25 off 13 balls) and skipper Shubman Gill (36 off 28 balls). However, Sai Sudarshan’s 45 off 36 balls and David Miller’s unbeaten 44 off 27 balls steered GT to a comfortable seven-wicket win with five balls to spare.
Mohit Sharma’s impactful spell earned him the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his crucial contributions with the ball.
With this result, GT finds themselves in the fourth spot on the points table, boasting two wins and a loss, accumulating a total of four points. On the other hand, SRH is currently in the fifth position, with one win and two losses, totaling two points.
