Manchester United has officially appointed Ruben Amorim as their new head coach, with the 39-year-old Portuguese set to take charge on November 11 after transferring from Sporting Lisbon. He has signed a contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2027.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, a former United striker, will continue as interim manager for the club’s next three matches following Erik ten Hag’s departure earlier this week. Amorim’s arrival marks the sixth permanent managerial appointment for United since the end of Sir Alex Ferguson’s legendary tenure in 2013.
In a statement, the club expressed enthusiasm for Amorim’s arrival, stating, “Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.” Sporting Lisbon confirmed that United paid €11 million (£9.25 million) to activate Amorim’s release clause.
Amorim’s debut in charge will take place on November 24 against newly promoted Ipswich in the Premier League, followed by a Europa League match against Norway’s Bodo/Glimt on November 28. His first league game at Old Trafford will be against Everton the subsequent weekend.
Before joining United, Amorim led Sporting Lisbon to significant successes, including a Primeira Liga title in his first season. His tenure included a remarkable 14-game unbeaten streak after losing in the Portuguese Super Cup. He will oversee his last match for Sporting against Braga on November 10 before transitioning to his new role.
Amorim arrives at Manchester United at a challenging time, with the team currently sitting 14th in the Premier League and struggling in the Europa League. However, his reputation as a promising manager precedes him, having begun his career with Casa Pia and quickly advancing through the ranks.
Having trained under José Mourinho during his time at Old Trafford in 2018, Amorim is often compared to the renowned coach. His managerial style emphasizes youth development and an energetic approach to play, qualities that United officials believe align well with the club’s goals.
Following Ten Hag’s departure, United acted swiftly to secure Amorim, with chief executive Omar Berrada traveling to Lisbon for negotiations. The club had anticipated the complexities of his release from Sporting, but ultimately secured a satisfactory outcome.
Club officials view Amorim as a key figure in the new era under Ineos ownership. His appointment is part of a broader strategy to rejuvenate the squad and restore Manchester United’s competitive edge.
