Champions Trophy 2025: ICC Should Intervene, Jay Shah Says Over PCB’s PoK Trophy Tour

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has expressed strong disapproval of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) decision to include Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in the planned tour for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The controversy began when the PCB revealed its plans for the trophy tour, listing locations such as Skardu, Muzaffarabad, and Murree—regions that are part of the disputed PoK area.

PoK an integral part of India

Shah, speaking on behalf of the BCCI, raised concerns with the ICC, emphasizing India’s stance on PoK as an integral part of its territory and highlighting the cricketing body’s ongoing concerns regarding political interference in sports.

In response to India’s objections, the ICC reportedly instructed the PCB to remove PoK from the planned segment of the trophy tour. Although the PCB had previously announced a nationwide tour starting November 16, the inclusion of PoK sparked diplomatic tensions and heightened sensitivities between the cricket boards of India and Pakistan.

PoK trophy tour and Champions Trophy 2025

India’s firm position on this issue has raised questions about the potential impact on the Champions Trophy 2025, which Pakistan is set to host. India had already stated it would not send a team to Pakistan due to security and geopolitical concerns. The addition of PoK to the promotional activities further complicates matters.

With India’s decision not to travel to Pakistan for the tournament, the participation of the Indian team remains uncertain, which poses a significant challenge for the tournament’s financial and competitive success. The BCCI has communicated its position to the ICC, underscoring the importance of addressing these concerns.

Hybrid model for Champions Trophy 2025?

The ICC is reportedly considering alternative options, including a hybrid model, where India’s matches would be played at neutral venues while other games would remain in Pakistan. However, the PCB has consistently opposed such arrangements in the past. As the ICC navigates the fallout from the controversy surrounding the trophy tour, the hosting arrangements for the Champions Trophy 2025 remain under review, with potential implications for the tournament’s format, schedule, and venue.
