Arsenal’s young talent Ethan Nwaneri shined in a 5-1 victory over Bolton in the English League Cup on Wednesday. The 17-year-old made an impression with two goals in his first senior start, while Raheem Sterling, newly signed from Chelsea, also scored his debut goal for the club.
It was a night of milestones for Arsenal’s rising stars, as 16-year-old goalkeeper Jack Porter became the youngest player to start for the team at just 16 years and 72 days, breaking Cesc Fabregas’ record.
Nwaneri, who holds the record for the youngest Arsenal player after debuting at 15 in 2022, scored his first senior goal in the 37th minute, following Declan Rice’s opener in the 16th minute. Nwaneri added his second goal early in the second half.
Although Aaron Collins pulled one back for Bolton in the 53rd minute, Sterling netted again in the 64th, with Kai Havertz rounding off the win in the 77th minute.
Meanwhile, Liverpool began their League Cup defense with a commanding 5-1 win over West Ham. Mohamed Salah added a third goal in the 74th minute, and West Ham’s Edson Alvarez was sent off shortly after. Cody Gakpo completed the win with two late goals, one in the 90th minute and another in stoppage time.
In the fourth-round draw, Manchester City will face Tottenham away in the standout fixture, while Liverpool will travel to Brighton. Arsenal has a match against second-division Preston, and Manchester United will host Leicester.
If Newcastle overcomes AFC Wimbledon, they will meet Chelsea, while Aston Villa will play Crystal Palace in another Premier League matchup. Brentford faces Sheffield Wednesday, and Southampton hosts Stoke.
