Purple Cap IPL 2024: Yuzvendra Chahal Tops The List After Rajasthan Royals’ Win Against Royal Challengers Bangalore

Yuzvendra Chahal’s bowling figures of 2/34 against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday propelled him to the top of the Purple Cap standings in the ongoing IPL 2024 season. Chahal’s effective spell, coupled with Nandre Burger’s 1/33, limited RCB to a total of 183/3 in their 20 overs in Jaipur. On the other hand, Virat Kohli showcased a splendid performance, smashing an unbeaten century with 113 runs off 72 balls.

In pursuit of 184 runs, Rajasthan Royals successfully reached 189/4 in just 19.1 overs, securing a victory by six wickets. Jos Buttler played a stellar innings, remaining unbeaten with a remarkable century, scoring 100 runs off 58 balls. Additionally, RR’s skipper Sanju Samson contributed with a half-century, scoring 69 runs.

Chahal surpassed GT’s pacer Mohit Sharma in the race for the Purple Cap. Currently, Mohit holds the second position with seven wickets, closely followed by CSK’s Mustafizur Rahman, also with seven wickets. Mayank Yadav from LSG occupies the fourth spot with six wickets, while DC’s Khaleel Ahmed holds the fifth position with six wickets.

Post-match, RR captain Samson expressed his thoughts, stating, “With a target below 190 and some dew, considering our batting lineup, it was a feasible score to chase. Fortunately, with a few games left, the team is performing well. A four-day gap allows for recovery, rest, and training, which helps us approach the next game with renewed energy. Our bowling performance rates at 9 and batting at 8.7. [Regarding Buttler’s performance], It was just a matter of time. If he gets through the powerplay, he can deliver, and I’m delighted for him and the team.”

In previous IPL seasons, notable bowlers such as Sohail Tanvir, RP Singh, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have clinched the Purple Cap. Bhuvneshwar remains the only player to secure back-to-back Purple Caps in 2016 and 2017. Last year, Mohammed Shami claimed the award with 28 dismissals, while Chahal himself received the accolade in 2022 with 27 dismissals.
